Sample Letter for Canadian MPs

Dear Sir / Madam ,

As you may know, on December 4, 2006, Dionisio Diaz Garcia, a Honduran lawyer who was known as "the lawyer of the poor" and whose work involved providing free legal representation to impoverished security guards and other workers whose labor rights were being violated, was shot to death by two hit-men while on his way to court. Mr. Diaz worked for a project supported by U.S. Christian nonprofit the Association for a More Just Society (AJS). Many of your constituents, including myself, strongly support AJS's efforts to promote justice and the rule of law in Honduras.

Thanks in large part to the outcry raised by Canadian citizens (including myself and others in your constituency), legislators, and diplomats, in January of 2008 the two alleged hit-men were arrested, and on February 27, 2009, they were convicted and sentenced to over 20 years in prison. However, the "intellectual authors" of this crime—those who hired the hitmen—have yet to be brought to justice.

I believe that your voice is crucial for bringing these powerful assassination plotters to justice. Please consider doing the following:

1. Contact Canadian diplomatic officials in Honduras. Thank them for the efforts they have made to remind Honduran officials of the importance of this case, and encourage them to keep up the good work.

2. Contact the Honduran Ambassador to Canada and the Honduran consul in our province (if there is one) and tell them you and your constituents are interested in seeing that the people who planned and paid for Dionisio Díaz's assassination are brought to justice.

With your help, I believe justice truly can be done for Dionisio. Thank you in advance for your support.
