Justice for Burger King Employee
"Look! The wages you
failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The
cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty." —James 5:4 | |||||||||
| On September 3, 2008 former Burger King
employee Jovel Inestroza (pictured above)
celebrated an important victory in a legal
battle that has lasted for years. A judge
sentenced INTUR, the Honduran owners of
Burger King, to pay
Jovel 21,720.17 Lempiras (1,150.00 USD)
plus the equivalant of severance pay from the
date of his unjustified dismissal to
the date the sentence was issued.
Twenty-six months ago, Jovel had begun meeting with fellow employees to brainstorm about how they could defend the labor rights that they were already guaranteed by law, but which were routinely trampled on. Such meetings are not a legal grounds for firing without severance benefits—so instead his employers fired him on a false pretext that he had treated a customer poorly. INTUR has appealed the ruling; the case will now proceed to the Court of Appeals. An AJS-supported lawyer will continue to accompany Jovel to victory. Please continue to pray for justice for Jovel!
