15-year-old Sandra* was repeatedely sexually abused by her father and older brothers--who threatened to kill her if she told anyone what was happening. Living in a mountain settlement in a remote part of Honduras, in with the nearest neighbor over a mile away, her chances of being rescued seemed slim.

But when AJS-supported justice workers found out about her case, things changed quickly. A lawyer and investigator supported by AJS helped authorities rescue Sandra and place her in a group home. They also helped the authorities arrest and convict the men who abused her, thus preventing them from harming Sandra and other girls in the future. Thanks to AJS-supported justice workers, and to the faithful AJS supporters who make their work possible, hope has been restored for Sandra.

Honduras is a beautiful country, full of pine-covered mountains and friendly, generous people. But it’s also home to grave injustices: impoverished men, women, and children are victimized first by perpetrators of robbery, rape, and murder and second by a justice system that too often does not come through for these victims; workers' rights are violated, and workers punished for simply seeking to learn their rights; poor urban dwellers lack land titles that would enable them to make investments and have a more secure future; politicians fill their pockets with public funds. 

The Association for a More Just Society to fight such injustices by overseeing and funding projects that:

  • Provide free legal aid to victims of violence, labor violations, and other injustices.
  • Empower church and community leaders to stand up for justice.
  • Investigate and publish stories that the mainstream press would rather ignore, through an online investigative journal, Revistazo.com.
By producing Bible studies, sponsoring and participating in conferences, and working on-one-on with local groups and congregations, AJS also works to help North American Christians to follow God's call to do justice.
