What is the Homicide Rate in Honduras?

In Honduras, the homicide rate is 43.6 per 100,000, which means that for every 100,000 of Honduras’ inhabitants, about 44 people will be murdered every year. In 2017, 3,866 individuals were murdered, about 11 people per day. Honduras has one of the highest homicide rates in the world, following El Salvador (60 per 100,000) and Venezuela (89 per 100,000).

Honduras’ homicide rate is eight times higher than the United States average and eight times higher than global averages.

But there is hope.

Though Honduras’ homicide rate remains one of the highest in the world, it has decreased every year since it peaked in 2011. In 2011, Honduras had the highest homicide rate in the world, but in six years, the homicide rate has dropped by a half. In 2017, there were 3,238 fewer murders than there were in 2011.
