Pray with AJS: March 2019
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loosen the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter – when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?” -Isaiah 58:6-7
For the next forty days, many Christians in Honduras will observe Lent, a time of reflection on Jesus’ death and resurrection. During this season of repentance of hurtful practices and investment in new habits, we remember that the practice of justice is close to God’s heart. As we loosen the chains of injustice, share our food with the hungry, and provide the poor wanderer with shelter, we learn to hunger and thirst for God’s coming kingdom. Thank you for your commitment to pray for AJS – these prayers sustain us as we work in Honduras. Will you continue to pray with us?
- Praise God for recent encouragement in the fight against corruption in Honduras! Transparency International’s (TI) President Delia Ferreira visited us in Honduras and spoke highly of our new anti-corruption tool (AJS-Honduras belongs to TI’s global alliance against corruption). We hold this affirmation dear because TI’s 2018 Corruption Perception Index shows that Honduras faces both key advances and new challenges in the path to transparency. We give thanks for our wise, committed Honduran coworkers who work for this transparency with hope.
- Praise God for the recent start to a new school year in Honduran public schools. AJS’ involvement in Honduras’ public education system has resulted in full days of class and better use of class time. Please pray for the well-being and growth of teachers, students, and their families as they dream and learn.
- Praise God for decreasing violence and increasing accountability in the Rivera Hernandez community in Honduras. For years, this community was dismissed as a hopelessly violent area, but our Peace and Justice team has worked tirelessly to solve murders and bring hope to families there. In February, there were 0 homicides in that community! Please pray for wisdom and bravery as we continue work in that community and as we expand our crime-solving methodology to additional communities in partnership with the National Police.
